Your parents always told you “Hate is a strong word”. They were right; hate tears people apart, it is the cause of war and feuds , it creates chaos, and ruins lives, hate is destructive. Hate is a powerful weapon that can be accidentally and purposely used. Displays of hatred are often showed in stories and the hate always causes conflict. In Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, the hatred between two families leads to the tragic deaths of many people. In Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood, every human has hatred for witches and this leads to a bad deception. A strong rivalry exists between the Capulet and the Montague family in Shakespeare's, Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare does not reveal to us why such a hatred exists. In Shakespeare's tale, the hate between the two families causes fights, arguments, and even death. The members of the two families make all their decisions about each other based on hate. “The day is hot; the Capulets, abroad;And if we meet we shall not ’scape a brawl,” (Shakespeare 3.1.1). Even if members of the two families simple come across each other in the city they start something. In Born Wicked it is the same. If any person were to come upon a witch and know she was a witch, that witch would be killed. “They would kill me. Immediately and without trial. They would believe they were doing it for the good of New England. Perhaps they’d make an example of all three of us—burn us at the stake, or hang us in the town square…”(Spotswood, 63). Without trial, it is with fear and hatred for anything to do with witches that they were to be killed he fact that she's was a witch whom were hated altered every decision Cate can make, because if she is caught she will be killed. These dire consequences are also observed in Born Wicked, death is the result of hatred in this tale as well. However there are more instances caused by the hatred of witches such as broken relationships and just flat out bad circumstances. It creates a fearful world with a dictator-like group who control everyone. “Men are not punished as severely as women, but for rising up against the Brotherhood, there are prison ships.” (Spotswood, 191). The Brotherhood are the men who originally decided to kill all the witches, they have only but hate for their kind. The Brotherhood have used hate as a slogan for their leadership and power. This has resulted in a sexist, dictator-like group whom only inflict pain and complete order upon people. These are the consequences of hate, they are not small and should not be overlooked.
