The term “yellow journalism” started in the late 1800’s when Hearst decided that he wanted his newspaper to be significantly more popular than Pulitzer’s, who, at the time, published the most successful newspaper, The New York World. Hearst was actually succeeding, until Pulitzer hired the artist, Outcault. People began to notice Pulitzer’s newspaper because of a cartoon about a boy dressed in yellow known as the yellow kid. Hearst got jealous and hired Outcault to draw the yellow kid in his newspaper as well. Soon, both newspapers had comics featuring the yellow kid. This is where the term “yellow journalism” originated, but soon after the Spanish American war started, it gained a totally different meaning. Hearst realized that he could use
