Comparing Impulsivity In Romeo And Juliet By Baz Luhrmann

“Never give a person a piece of your mind when all you really wanted to do was give them a piece of your heart”(Shannon L. Alder). Often when we love something, we give it our whole heart. When Romeo and Juliet loved each other, they gave each other their heart, mind and soul. What was originally intended as a sweet love story between two foes turned violent as they let their heart make decisions intended for their mind. In the 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet, Baz Luhrmann's music choices, setting and directorial choices portrays Shakespeare's intended message that caution is better than impulsivity.

To begin with, In the 1990’s version of Romeo and Juliet, the theme of caution vs impulsivity is shown through the directorial choices of the play. In Act 5, Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo shortly after finding out about Juliet's supposed death, says ““Well Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight.” Romeo’s words in this scene not only prove his impulsivity through quick decision making, but this theme was further enhanced by the directorial choices of Baz Lurhman. In the Film, Romeo screams “Either you or I or both must go with him.” This, showing Romeo's anger in the scene, comes after Tybalt's murder of Romeo's best friend Mercutio and the high speed car chase Romeo took to get there. After Romeo reaches him, Romeo kills Tybalt in a shootout and then the entire scene goes quiet. Through Baz Luhrmann use of a loud high speed car chase leading up to Tybalt death and a long quiet pause after, the theme that caution is better then impulsivity is shown through the symbolic regret Romeo feels after. When everything is loud and fast the theme of impulsivity is shown through sound and after the impulsive action of killing Tybalt the scene falls quite symbolically representing his regret of the impulsivity leading up to that
