A Child’s War : Comparison Essay “All progress means war on society”, George Bernard Shaw once said. As society becomes more advanced in technology, education, and science, the bigger the gap between what is right for society and what is right for oneself becomes. The question is: how are the children affected? Children happen to deal with the war on society caused by changing times better than most adults, due to being able to keep their innocence, some individualism, but still conforming and changing with the times. The children in the movie Powaqqatsi and the children in the image, Children’s Innocence, both show characteristics of conforming yet individualism, which is how they deal with war on society better than adults. With everything in the picture being white it shows everyone going in the same direction and that nothing is out of order or different. As society progresses, the less differences and individualism people have between each other. In the movie Powaqqatsi, it clearly shows society conforming and becoming more alike in many different scenes. For example, in the beginning of the movie, all the houses are in their own areas, with different structures, colors, and surrounding. By the end of the movie, most people were living in apartment buildings or condos where every home looked exactly the same as the one next to it. Society had conformed to look the same, do the same, and act the same. An additional example of society conforming in Powaqqatsi, was at the beginning of the movie there was a scene that was taken from a bird’s eye view and was of a town, the people in the town were all walking around, but everyone in different ways. Some were walking left, some right, some running, and some walking. The people in the scene were not concerned about others, they were simply doing their own thing at their own paces. In the end of the movie, there was a similar scene, of a bigger city from a bird’s eye view, except this time the people were walking at the same speed, in the same direction. Like George Bernard Shaw said, “Progress means war on society,” yet with some individualism the war may not be as big. In the movie there was change going on all the time and it looked as if everyone was doing the same things at the same time. In the movie there were scenes with individualism, one of those scenes being when kids were walking from school and they were wearing uniforms and going in the same direction, except one girl was walking with a bright red bag that none of the other kids had. Her red bag shows individualism in her because nobody else had something like this. Also, in the image, Children’s Innocence, the children show individualism because the whole image is white except for the kids with colored clothing. Their clothing is basically the only colors in the whole picture. It is easier for kids to adapt to change in society because children can keep their individuality longer than most adults, kids have more creative and optimistic minds that allow them to be different without thinking anything of
