Oftentimes, minor characters help to reveal a theme or contribute to the characterization of the protagonist. In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Helen Burns serves as a foil character to the protagonist, Jane Eyre. Throughout the novel, Helen’s docile and pious nature helps to emphasize Jane’s development from a passionate girl to a modest woman. Helen’s theological beliefs also allow her to serve as a foil character to Mr. Brocklehurst, the headmaster of Lowood Institution, and St John Rivers, a zealous missionary, in order to reveal how Christianity is used to control Jane. Compared to the male characters in the novel, Helen’s positive use of religion proves to be more effective in encouraging Jane to adopt Christian values.
In the novel we follow the protagonist, a young Victorian woman who struggles to overcome the oppressive patriarchal society in which she is entrapped. It is a story of enclosure and escape, from the imprisonment of her childhood to the possible entrapment of her daunting marriage. Throughout the novel Jane must fight against her inevitable future that society has already chosen for her. We see her attempt to overcome the confinements of her given gender, background and status. She must prove her worth against the men she encounters throughout her life, showing her equality in intelligence and strength.
At the end of the play, we see another side of Helen, we see her true self, the one that shows different feeling besides anger. Even though she told Billy, nobody can not see her with him, because of her reputation ( the girl with a strong temper), she did not have to said yes to go on a date with him,but she did. Even though it may not sound right, Helen reminded of Billy about how his parents died, because it is a reminder on how similar Helen and Billy are. Both of Lockwood, 4 them are constantly torn between their obligations to either, their “aunts” and “brother” and their obligations to themselves and their own happiness. Jane Love was a normal girl, in a normal house, with normal parents as so it may seems. She is tall and curvaceous, her body is the true definition of the hour glass frame. She’s well like at her school and community. Her face is well lit and vibrant, she has a sparkle in her eyes, and her mood was always like thought of unicorns and rainbows. Until one day, one day something tragic happens.
In Gateshead she was terrified of bothering the Reed’s and being sent back to the red-room. At Lowood she was first focused on her studies and then her pupils. She wants to feel secure and like nothing could harm her in anyway. At Thornfield Jane was making some money from being a governess. She met someone she loved and she was at one of the highest points in her life.
Jane states that she doesn 't love her aunt or even acknowledge their familial bond when she doesn 't address her aunt by the title of "aunt." Even as a child, Jane has a strong moral standard. After Jane gratefully leaves her aunt for Lowood, Jane conflicts with Mr. Brocklehurst. Mr Brocklehurst publicly accuses Jane of being a liar. Jane later approaches a teacher of Lowood, calling in evidence from a doctor from her aunt 's
In the beginning, she is deprived of education, love and appreciation of her presence which ultimately is her prime reasoning of taking off to be successful. Her experience at Gateshead was nothing more than miserable, she fought for what she needed and grew out of her comfort zone to stick up for herself. The strict rules and limits to freedom was not something Jane could handle for much longer, starting with the false accusations said by Brocklehurst of Jane. Brocklehurst is one of the many obstacles Jane fights to become happy and successful. She did not let him control how she envisioned her future life, rather she became even more passionate to prove how much of a cruel master he was.
Over the course of Jane’s journey, she struggles with her own Christian faith in God and beliefs as well as with the approaches to religion the characters Mr Brocklehurst, Helen Burns and St. John Rivers have chosen. Mr Brocklehurst Jane’s first encounter with one of the strongly religious characters takes place in her aunt’s house. Jane meets Mr Brocklehurst, the master Lowood school, where she will be studying and eventually become a teacher later in the novel. During her first interaction with him Mr Brocklehurst promptly asks Jane “Do you read your Bible?”
