You know what it’s like to live as a teen in the United States, but what do you think it’s like to live as a teen in Japan? Japan’s and the United States’ teenagers both have many differences and many similarities. Two categories that they have many similarities and differences in is the teenagers rights/responsibilities and their hobbies. Many Similarities can be found in the rights/responsibilities and educations of Japanese and US teens. One similarity between the two is that they both have more access to education (Luckerson). This is basically meaning that education is something that is more prized and is easier to get even if you’re poor, which is important for Japanese teens because the school they get into is based on their test scores (wells) so if they try they can get into a decent school no matter what. One difference between the teens of the two countries is that, in Japan, teenagers go shopping after school or do karaoke in groups of friends(Wells/Condon). In the US, teenagers usually do sports or play videogames as a hobby. This shows that US teens aren’t as in-person sociable as Japanese teens are. This is important because socialization in person is important for development of empathy and identity. Another difference between them is that in the US, teenagers don’t make phone calls and look for private communication(i.e. Snapchat) (Luckerson). In Japan, though they do use social media and some private communication, teenagers go out more. In their free time, Japanese teens usually hang out with groups of friends and go out shopping, eating, doing karaoke, and many more things. This shows that American teens tend to be more secretive than Japanese teens. It’s important because being secretive is bad for you because it can cause anxiety. These were just a couple of the many differences between American and Japanese
