Prior to the Purchase of the Louisiana Territory, Thomas Jefferson was desired to explore the area to see if there was an all-water route to the Pacific Ocean and claim that land for the United States. The main goals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was to map the region, collect information on new species, and to establish contact with the Native groups and make peace with them. In 1803, Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon, which embarked on the new journey out West with Mayweather Lewis and William Clark, they also recruited the help of Sacagawea. She helped the men survive and discover the Rockies, plants, and animals in forever changing the scientific community in 1805. Yet, in 1823 settlers and pioneers began to settle the West in heading toward California.
Throughout 1803, Jefferson had talked with Meriwether Lewis, a young army veteran and his private secretary, about the Louisiana Territory. Jefferson wanted Lewis to lead a group of people out into the west to explore as much land as he could. Lewis, an adventurer at heart, accepted Jefferson’s request, and in early 1804, went to Philadelphia to recruit the men he wanted to accompany him on his journey. Among the men that were recruited was William Clark, an old friend of Lewis and the man that would share command of the band of explorers with Lewis. Petitioning for this bill took great courage, especially because the government had been at its riches point. Jefferson’s dilemma in the Louisiana Purchase In April of 1803 Thomas Jefferson was faced with many moral dilemmas in the process of buying the Louisiana territory. Though the price for the territory was beyond generous, Jefferson felt that by purchasing the territory he would be going against his beliefs that the constitution should be followed word for word. The constitution said nothing of the president having the power to purchase land from another government, or to use money of the states for the same purpose (“the moral dilemma”). Another problem was once the land was purchased, there was a fear that it could have been a waste since they had no way to know the layout of the land, and what it would be useful for.
