Of Mice and Men Essay
Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in the 1920’s-1930’s during the Great Depression and rebuilding of America? Lennie Smalls and George Milton got the chance to experience that event straight on in the story “Of Mice and Men”. John Steinbeck, the author, includes many types of themes in his book, but I believe his story is trying to portray how the setting was a very difficult time in America with all the problems that sprung up. Problems in America ranged from the late 1920’s- late 1930’s itself, the Great Depression, and the newly upstarted “American Dream”. This time period was one of the toughest periods America has ever experienced.

It began from term invented by James Truslow Adams in his book “The Epics of America”, it was made to model the Old American World. The main idea of the American Dream was to have equal rules and opportunities for all no matter their social status, race, or religion. Most old school folks never agreed with this way of life, but it started to grow. Another huge part of the American Dream was to own your personal land, that showed you were an established man in the rough American world. George and Lennie would always talk and joke around about how they would buy a big piece of property once they got great jobs “An live off the fatta the lan’,” (Pg.14). Lennie and George were always a couple of clowns when it came to topics like those where they put a lot of thought into it. George and Lennie might have had their differences here and there, but they were like brothers to each other in the end.
