Siddh Shah Dr. Jessica Brosnan College English 3, Period 8 1 May 2023 A Comparison Between Boys and Girls Would different gender behave the same if put in a group with the same gender and left unsupervised? The novel lord of the Flies and the documentary Boys Alone are very similar despite one being a fictional work and the other being a real-life documentary. Both of the works explore the behavior of boys aged 11 to 12 years old when left alone without any adult supervision or rules. Despite the difference in where it's taking palace and what the circumstances are, the boys in both the novel and the documentary display many similarities in their behavior and their hierarchy. It is a prominent theme in both the documentary and the novel. In the documentary, bullying is shown when Sim is trying to catch up on some sleep outside in the tent in the backyard, but some of the other boys come out to the backyard and start to annoy Sim while he is sleeping (Flitcrof 16:03-16:50). This demonstrates the idea of bullying because the simple definition of bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance (Assistant). That is the same case here, the other boys are breaking Sim’s peace and not letting him sleep, they are hitting the tent with balls and riding bicycles around the tent to break his peace and his sleep. When it comes to the novel, the theme of bullying is shown when the boys are calling Piggy ‘Fatty’ and Ralph tries to stop them by saying “‘He is not fatty, ‘ cried Ralph, ‘his real name’s Piggy!’ ‘Piggy!’. A storm of laughter arose and even the tiniest child joined in. For the moment the boys were in a closed circuit of sympathy with Piggy outside; he went very pink, bowed his head, and cleaned his glasses again” (Golding 21). This demonstrates that the group of boys as a whole are laughing at Piggy due to his name because as the definition of bullying above states that any type of unwanted behavior is a form of bullying. So the amount of bullying would have remained the same but it would have been more verbal bullying than aggressive bullying. Just as the example given in the previous paragraph, girls would just cut each other off, whereas boys would use physical violence. Also, the effect of peer pressure would be reduced, just as in the example that I gave in the previous paragraph, as the girls would be easy on each other, whereas boys would be harsh towards each other. In conclusion, the dynamics of bullying and the effect of peer pressure exist in both genders, it is bound to look completely different for both groups due to the groups they hang out with (girls with girls, and guys with guys).
