The chosen texts for this are Macbeth by Shakespeare, Pan's labyrinth directed by Guillermo del toro, The things we carried by Tim o’Brien and Born on the fourth of july directed by Oliver Stone. These texts all have an overarching theme of war and conflict. The two links between these texts is war destroys innocence and the responsibilities / qualities of leadership. These texts are set in different wars like The things they carried and born on the fourth of july are both set during the horrific vietnam war. Macbeth is set in medieval scotland with wars of people vying to be king. Pan's labyrinth is slightly different as it is set after the spanish civil war but there is still a war against rebels going on. But her innocence begins to be taken from her as soon as she enters the fascist compound. This is symbolised when she first meets Captain Vidal when she goes to shake his hand and he just slaps it away and says “wrong hand ofelia”. Captain Vidal was supposed to be ofelias new “father” shows disintrest and carelessness towards her in where a father should be loving and caring. This takes away her innocence of being a child who is loved by two parent figures.But her last bit of innocence is taken from her by the cruel hands of Captain Vidal who murders her in cold blood. This showed the horrors of war because even innocent children were not spared. This is loss of innocence is also shown the the film Born on the fourth
