Marilyn Minter's artwork is by far the most eccentric and beautiful I have seen to date. Ranging from still life to art being captured on video to pornography, Minter’s exhibition “Pretty/Dirty/” at the Brooklyn Museum is one I will never forget. The blatant feminism throughout all of Minter’s work was refreshing. The exhibit began with photographs Marilyn Minter had taken of her mother. As her mother had struggled with alcohol abuse Minter noticed even as life took a toll on her mother, she remained a narcissist. The photographs perfectly captured the narcissism and Minter equated it to how society subconsciously manipulates you to try at all costs to remain appearing “beautiful”. The next set of Marilyn Minter’s artwork revolved around pornography. Minter decided to explore and depict women’s sexuality more because of it being a sort of taboo throughout time in several different cultures. The works “Chiaroscuro”, made in 1991, and “White Cotton Panties”, made in 1992, were both artworks that consisted of enamel on metal. “Chiaroscuro” portrays a woman’s hand with red nail polish pleasuring herself. Red being a color of lust and the act in the artwork itself being sexual in nature, this exemplifies how there should be no shame in a woman’s wants and desires. Just a man craves and fantasizes without society looking down upon him, it should be the same for women. I found this piece to be quite liberating, as it was open for all to see and admire. “White Cotton Panties” is exactly as the title describes.
