Funeral speech; Mark Antony vs Brutus Knowing the way to manipulate people to one’s advantage. The story of Julius Caesar contains many rhetorical devices thought the entire story. Brutus and Mark Antony funeral speech’s that contained the same rhetorical devices, but the way they use them make a difference. Between the two of these speech’s Mark Antony delivered is speech’s much better but using repetition, rhetorical questions and hyperbole. Mark Antony delivered his speech about Julius Caesar. Mark Antony use several rhetorical devices for example he used repetition. One of the ways he used repetition was when he said “For Brutus is an honorable man; So are they honorable men” (Shakespeare). Antony kept repeating the word honorable to emphasize that Caesar was a good man not a bad man as Brutus for told that he was. He also used the word the honorable in a form of irony because Brutus is also an honorable man who killed his friend. Antony was very wise to alliterate the way he did like how he said “But Brutus says he was ambitions; and Brutus is an honorable man” (Shakespeare). The first way he used hyperbole was when he said “my heart is in the coffin there with Caesar” (Shakespeare). Antony said this to show he cared very much for Caesar and the people see that Caesar's death effect him. He also used that hyperbole to try and get compassion from the people. He was not only using his words but his actions. “his eyes as red as fire with weeping” (Shakespeare). This hyperbole was said by one of the towns people due to that Antony was pretending to cry. To have the people feel bad that not one of them cried over the death of Caesar. The last way he used hyperbole was “have stood against the world” (Shakespeare).
