Comparing Masks In T. R. Hummer's They Wear The

In the poems "We Wear the Mask", by Paul Laurence Dunbar and "Glass Ceiling " by T.R Hummer expresses how not everything is as it seems, which i would agree with. Many shield themselves with masks, different personalities, even their appearances can be different from the humans they really are. Lately we have been studying poems in which the themes consist of shielding themselves for social reasons. Although not everyone does shield their true self, many if not most people do it for social reasons. In the two poems mentioned previously these are clear examples of themes that convey that everything is not what it seems.

In the poem "We Wear the Mask" by Paul Laurence Dunbar, shows how we wear a mask to hide our true selves from the rest of society. You may be thinking why would you wanna hide your true self if you are one that doesn't do this type of social masking. Although you will understand Dunbar if you, yourself have done this before. In todays society many feel the obligation to always be okay so we have to wear this mask. "Because she wanted to teach me a lesson about the natural world, my grandmother raised Her .22 rifle-we were rabbit hunting.." Hummer later reveals in his poem that even though he mentioned his grandmother he did it because no one would believe it was his mother that did this, as mother are supposed to be running a software company or something like that. "I said "my grandmother" Because if I'd said "my mother" you wouldn't believe a word of it since since a mother should be leading a research group, running a software company, but a grandmother still can dress in buckskin.." This only shows how we have shaped the roles of people in society and things are not what they seem to be
