Annelies Maffeo Mrs. Root LA Period 1 March 15, 2024 The Displacement of Sudan During the Sudanese Civil war, 20,000 boys fled to refugee camps, leaving their life and loved ones behind. The boys of “A long Walk to Water” and “The Lost Boys of Sudan” were forced to cross dangerous rivers, months of walking to just get to the refugee camps and the Lost Girls had so much housework to do, arrange marriages, and had to watch over guardians children. Park uses and alters history when writing her story by comparing how the lost boys and Salva both had to flee to refugee camps, and contrasts by showing how Nya’s story and the lost girls story was much different. In “The Lost Boys of Sudan”, it states, “This time the journey was during heavy rains, and many perished crossing the swollen rivers or were hit by aerial bombardments.” (Page 17). This was the condition they were in, trying to get to the camps. It was a long journey and took about 6-10, dreadful weeks of limited water and food, and many bandits along the way. In the Long Walk to Water, it also states, “More than twelve hundred boys arrived safely. It took them a year and a half.” (Parks 82). Salva’s journey took a year and a half to make it to the refugee camp. He had to cross the hot and dry desert and a dangerous river just to make it to the camp. Overall, both of their journeys were very challenging and were both sort of similar. The Lost Girls of Sudan and A Long Walk to Water are unalike stories. Nya, from A Long Walk to Water, was able to go to school and only have to fetch water. However, the lost girls of Sudan were not able to go to school, had to sit around all day and watch siblings, and had many chores assigned.
