A pedestrian is a person who is walking, especially in a town or city, rather than travelling in a vehicle. In many countries, especially Indonesia, walking behavior is visible to be unusual, despite there is the natural physiological of walking. Riding a car is seen as more normal. This takes people away from nature. In the other hand, there is still a country that priorities walking rather than riding. That is Australia. Here, I will discuss the difference between pedestrian in Australia and Indonesia.
In Australia, most people prefer to walk instead of using a vehicle. As much as possible, they will not use their car or motorcycle if there is no something urgent. They usually walk to shop, school and exercise. It is not normal if people say “I cannot walk”. But for the disabled people, it is common if they use car to the shop. For children who want to cross to school, there are security guards provided to help them crossing. In zebra cross, the cars will think about pedestrian. A driver must approach a children’s crossing or pedestrian crossing at a speed where the vehicle can be stopped safely before reaching it. The cars are always looking for pedestrian. If there are people who want to cross, the car will stop and let them cross the street. Also, the government provides signs for the pedestrian when they want to cross the street. People will be comfortable to cross because of the signs. Then, Australia has a definite lane for pedestrian. Main roads Australia will consider the safety of pedestrian crossing slip lanes. In contrast, driving is more normal than walking in Indonesia. Wherever the Indonesians go, they most prefer to use the vehicle instead of walking. Riding to the shop and school are very common.
