The Jungle written by Upton Sinclair is a book about the family of Jurgis Rudkus, an immigrant family, moving to America and having to work in meat packing plants in Chicago in the early 1900’s. Cinderella Man directed by Ron Howard is a movie that takes place during the Great Depression in the 1930’s is about a American boxer, James Braddock, that has to survive with little money after getting hurt and not being able to box. Jurgis Rudkus and James Braddock are very similar throughout this book and movie. They go through hard times, but in the end they get what they want and have a much better life.
Federalist Precis A group of like-minded men who are considered to be the “Founding Fathers” of America, made up of Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, wrote and published a group essay so to speak, under the pseudonym “Publius” (which refers to one of four roman aristocrats who overthrew a monarchy) full of their collected individual essays and entitled the collected group works “The Federalist” (1787). The 14th essay, a work of Madison, is deemed to be of particular importance in which Madison argues against critics that claim America is too large to be governed as a republic, and explains the concept of central government in the interest for the people, by the people. Madison furthers his argument by explaining the benefits of unity, and that a republic in the mold of America has never been seen before and requires the utmost unity for it to be successful. Madison effectively argues by addressing the counterargument in the opening paragraphs, which allows the audience to consider all the points of views and thus see the logic in Madison’s argument as he explains by saying:
“I had to believe that when things are bad, I can change them” –James Braddock. Within this piece of literacy work, James Braddock, who is the main character in the movie Cinderella Man, which is based off the book written by Jeremy Schaap, and Jurgis Rudkus, who is a fictional character from the book The Jungle written by Upton Sinclair. Cinderella Man takes place in New Jersey right before the Great Depression hits. The Jungle begins with Jurgis’ family coming to Chicago to work and they find a boarding house to live in and jobs within Packingtown to work at. Although Jurgis Rudkus and James Braddock are both hard working men, they have a wide variety of similarities and differences in physical traits, family dynamics, and personal values.
Society is an ever evolving element of life, and as society has changed over the years, so has works by authors and directors. As authors and directors gain influence from inspiring sources, they are also gaining influences from the surrounding culture and the time period that they are living in. This may even be subconsciously. New historicism is the theory that explains this and specifically focuses on just how the time period of a work changes and shows how an author's experiences come to life through a work. In Walt Disney’s, Cinderella, the time period glamorizes Cinderella’s journey to happiness while the Grimm Brothers version connects more with reality, teaching that media evolves to what society wants to see.
Compare and Contrast Essay Once upon a time there was a story about a girl named Cinderella. There have been many versions of this story written. There is a version for almost every culture, but they all lead back to the original version told by the Brother’s Grimm. Although the story has changed through time, the main plot stays the same. Cinderella is a young girl who is forced into being a servant for her family.

The movie “Ever After” by Andy Tennant, and The short story Cinderella by Perrault, are both very different takes on the story of Cinderella. Perrault’s version of the story is the story that most of us have grown up with. It’s captivating and magical, but also it’s very one-dimensional, with a “magic pumpkin” and a “fairy godmother”. While, Tennant’s version is by far more realistic in nature, there is no magic pumpkin, but there is a prince who becomes her husband, an evil stepmother, and a pretty, kind hearted girl who slaves away doing as her stepmother demands. The “fairy godmother” does not randomly appear from no where, in “Ever After”, instead she is replaced by the great inventor Leonardo Da Vinic.
“Always be a good girl, and I will look down from heaven and watch over you.” (Page 1) The Disney Cinderella was released on February 15th, 1950 but the tale told by The Grimm Brothers is a different twist on the Disney classic movie; instead of a fairy godmother and sweet, little mice running around, The Grimm Brothers wrote about a tree growing on Cinderellas mothers’ grave and with the help of tiny birds, every wish Cinderella makes comes true. The violent version of Cinderella by the Grimm Brother explains the struggle she faced trying to get away from her stepsisters but also keeping her humble and kind side looking for true love.
It is nearly impossible for a tale to be passed down generations and still stay the same. The fairy tale “Cinderella” told by the Grimm brothers is almost 206 years old, and differences can be seen between the modern “Cinderella” story and the original. In “Cinderella,” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, a young girl named Cinderella is treated like a servant by her family. Luckily she is gifted with beautiful clothing, enabling her to attend a festival, meeting her one true love. Cinderella gets married to the prince, and the step-sisters are punished by getting pecked in the eyes by birds.
Disney, alike many other popular storytellers, want these known stories to be friendly, animated, and with an intended audience of children. This is ironic because a retired professor of German and comparative literature from the University of Minnesota, Jack Zipes, directly compares this theme to a news interviewer that “the Grimm’s did not collect these tales for children. They collected these tales to show what life was like. And they wanted to reveal what they considered the divine truths of the tales.” It is obvious that Disney does not have the same motive as the Grimm’s did.
Perrault’s fairy tale follows the generic conventions of a traditional fairy tale which is what Atwood had been condemning. The tale begins with the sentence, “there were formerly a king and a queen, who were sorry they had no children”, which is the normally the beginning of most fairy tales (Perrault 398). The most notable characteristic of a fairy tale begins with the phrase “once upon a time” or a variation of it such as Perrault’s “there were” (398). Unlike Atwood, Perrault mentions that the princess was “the most beautiful person in the world” (399), focusing on more of a materialistic aspect of the princess instead of Atwood’s more realistic view of her. Perrault’s fairy tale includes other generic conventions like a handsome prince saving the day and marrying the princess, a happy ending, and an evil queen.
Both Cinderella and Cinder Edna had their own obstacles to overcome to be able to attend the ball. What do you think would happen if either of them just gave up and didn’t go to the ball? First, choose Cinderella or Cinder Edna to write about. Next, describe what you think would happen if the character you chose decided to not go to the ball. Here are some questions to think about: Would your character live happily ever after?
Response to Little Red Riding Hood The Little Red Riding Hood is a fairy tale that was originally written by the French writer Charles Perrault in 1697. Over time the story was re-written by various other writers like Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, James Thurber and Roald Dahlover. As each version of the story was re-written, the treatment of female roles have changed by progressing towards a more feminist viewpoint.
Perrault’s version of Cinderella’s ending is happier and includes forgiveness. Although the step sisters were cruel and treated Cinderella horribly she forgave them in the end and even found good husbands for them, and they all lived happily ever after. You can see from this that this story is intended to teach a moral lesson of forgiveness and kindness like I explained above. In Perrault’s version you can be terrible and unpleasant but you will be forgiven because that’s part of life. The Grimm brothers however have a different point of view on that matter.
The Disney version of the story of Cinderella is loosely based off of the original short story written by the Grimm brothers. It follows the basic plot of the original story. The differences between the two lie mainly in the details of the story. The Disney version is milder, leaving out the more gruesome details form the book. The story is simplified to make it enjoyable for the children who watch it.
