Edgar Allan Poe was known for his dark and mysteriously themed pieces of writing. His literary technique consists of using an abundance of imagery and symbolism which creates a haunting atmosphere for readers. He was an American author and poet who lived in the 19th century. Edgar Allan Poe’s macabre themed writings were all inspired from his traumatic childhood. The reason why all his writings have a very dark undertone is because of the things he experienced at such a young age. His parents died when he was a child and his wife died at a young age. The concept of death is so heavily laid out in Poe’s writings that it seems like a reflection of his traumatic childhood. Death became the norm for him in his life. Both of his parents died, and his wife died young. The concept of death in his writings is so significant as his own personal experiences are expressed in his characters’ deaths.

In ‘The Masque of the Red Death’, the plague still manages to kill the people partying even though they tried their best to avoid it. And in ‘The Cask of Amontillado’, Montresor seeks revenge on Fortunato and chains him to the wall and seals him in to die.
Poe’s use of the grotesque embodiment of death is surely from his disturbing childhood.

Death is inevitable and time is nothing but a timer until our last breath. It is human nature to try and slow down the process of ageing or in other words death. People will change their diets, eat vitamin supplements, and other various remedies, but their life will still end at some point. Death is inevitable and certain stories such as The Raven, and The Masque of the Red Death, all impose the idea of death and the inevitability of it. In The Masque of the Red Death, the people partying at Prince Prospero’s abbey tried their best to hide from the Red Death, yet their efforts were obsolete. The plague still caught up to them and killed them. In The Raven, the unnamed narrator has to come to terms with the fact that his wife is really dead and that she’s not coming back.
