Power has been the cause of many strifes throughout history. Understanding why these conflicts over power happen can help to lessen the amount of travesties that happen throughout the world. In Animal Farm, 1984, Beowulf, and Lord of the Flies, the plot of these books is all about these power struggles and structures. People seek power to control resources, such as food, money, and space, as shown through Beowulf, Animal Farm, 1984, and Lord of the Flies. For some, the desired resource is food. Whether it is having more food than others or controlling the supply, food motivates people to seek power. In 1984, Winston reads the book given to him by O’Brian. The pigs on Animal Farm are selling the yields of the farm and making money but, “Somehow it seemed as though the farm had grown richer without making the animals themselves any richer-except, of course, for the pigs and the dogs”. In the communist society that the animals live in, everyone is supposed to be equal with the same amount of food, same amount of money, and same amount of land. The pigs wanted to become in charge of the other animals because the pigs wanted to control resources like money. If the pigs truly did not want to become powerful to be in control of the money, then they would have shared the money evenly, but the pigs did not because they wanted to control the money.” Throughout all of Beowolf he has tried to seek power because he wants money. In the time period that Beowulf takes place, killing a monster is a method to gain power because it shows how strong and powerful a person is. Slaying the dragon will show that he has power and is superior compared to others and the reason he is doing it is to claim all the gold and treasure, money, in the tower.
