Taking a close look at both films, Like Water for Chocolate and Y Tu Mama Tambien, many themes can be talked about. Although more than one theme can be looked at, I would like to focus more on the theme of power. First off, what is power? Power has different contexts but the denotation that will be used is similar to control or authority. According to the films, power can be acquired through different sources.
In the film Like Water for Chocolate, the theme of power is well presented throughout the film. The protagonist of the film, Tita, was the last child to be born from her other two siblings. Alas, Tita had to care for her mother Elena until she died. Because of the tradition going on for generations in Elena’s family, she had all the power to do so herself. She wanted her daughter Tita to tend for her. Galeano wrote, “With the workers tied by inherited debts or by legal contract, slavery was the actual labor system” (Galeano, 121). What this quote means slavery was accepted and there was nothing wrong with it. The quote connects to the film because making a daughter tend you until you die is similar to slavery. Elena, Tita’s mother, died after being attacked by some bandits. Her dying only meant that she no longer had power over Tita. Tita was now free from her austere mother. That was the end of Elena’s power in the film Like Water for Chocolate. Now in the film Y Tu Mama Tambien, the power Tenoch and Julio soon went away after they had slept together. They didn’t keep in touch much and when they met again it was not the same relationship they had. It was clear that they would not be living a life without barriers again like they used to have when they would hang out. These films are not only similar but they have their own
