Salem Witch Trials VS. McCarthyism Trials
In both The Crucible and McCarthyism, we see that dishonest people get ahead by using distractions of other people. In both instances, falsely accuse other people of wrongdoing in order to divert attention away from their own wrongdoings. The main people in both The Crucible and The Red Scare also known as McCarthyism is used the witch hunts to gain power and look good in their community. For example, people stood up for themselves in both of these witch hunts. Arthur Miller who wrote the Crucible to stand up to Mccarthy about how ridiculous the communist witch hunt and was willing to stand up to the truth even though he knew he was going to get in trouble for telling the truth. Tituba, Giles Corey, Martha Corey, Rebecca Nurse, Goody Osborne, Goody Good, and John Proctor were all accused and brought to court by Abigail Williams and the rest of the girls, who claimed that these people signed the Devil’s book. For example, to save herself, Mary Warren says to Proctor in front of the whole court, “you’re the devil’s man!” (118) After brought to court, the court signed death warrants that led to the hanging of these accused people. The McCarthy Trials are searching for communist. Some of these people on McCarthy’s list were spies for the Soviet Union. Hundreds of Americans were being accused of being communists during this time. Plus, many of these people were government employees in the entertainment industry, educators, and labor union activists, who were suffering loss of employment or destruction of their careers some of them even suffered
