Sherman Alexie and I both have two difference-makers in our lives that have and will continue to make a difference in our lives. In “Superman and Me”, Sherman Alexie’s difference makers were books and his father. For example, Sherman said, “My father loved books, and since I loved my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well”. What Sherman meant here was that he decided to like books because like most children, they enjoy or want to enjoy what their parents have interests in. He liked that his father, unlike many other people he knew, had a passion for something that other people did not. I read books my father brought home from pawnshops and secondhand”. What he was trying to say here was that he loved to read! He would read anything that he laid his eyes on. This love of reading motivated him to want to write his own stories and poems that other people could enjoy just as he did. One last example is, “ The words inside of a paragraph worked together for a common purpose. They had some specific reason for being inside the same fence. This knowledge delighted me.” What he meant was that he took paragraphs out of books and applied them to the real-world in order to make better understanding of things going on around him. All of the words in the paragraph stood for something. Just like all of the people in a community.
