Poets of the 19th century, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman were intrigued by Transcendentalism. Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman are easily two of the most famous and well-known poets from their time period. The two of these talented poets revolutionized the study of the subject, of poetry. Dickinson and Whitman continue influencing the poetry industry today. Emily Dickinson was involved in transcendentalism but happened to be more on the religious side continuing to believe in her faith. Walt Whitman undeniably, wholeheartedly believed in transcendentalism. He wrote his poem ‘Song of Myself, 51’ in free verse, containing no rhyme or meter to be found in this poem, along with all of his many other poems. Whitman used a stanza break in the poem which makes it more lively, along with using other poetic devices. Emily Dickinson on another note is quite different in the way that she writes her poems, but they still have some similarities. Dickinson wrote a poem called ‘I measure every grief I meet’. Emily Dickinson was known to be a structured civilian who made her own way of writing. While Whitman is more carefree in his poems, Dickson tends to show a little more of a conservative side. Through the poem ‘I measure every grief I meet’, she shows her understanding of love and death, at the same time, different from Whitman. Dickinson shows her creative and different side of writing by using dashes throughout her poem(s). She also used an ABCB rhyme scheme which is told to be used throughout all of her poems. Though it may be hard to believe, both of these very different poets, still have some similarities when it comes to poetry.
