Homer’s Odyssey, a Greek epic poem, introduces mythological creatures, like the sirens, to an audience that becomes highly influenced and mesmerized by these creatures that it inspired new piece of literature. For example, Margaret Atwood dedicates a whole poem to the sirens, which is the first mentioned in The Odyssey as creatures that lures sailors to their death, but ,unlike the Odyssey, it is written in the point of view of the sirens. Even though the depiction of the sirens are distinct and told in different point of view, both pieces of writing, Homer’s Odyssey and Atwood’s “ Siren Song”, have similar elements of cleverness. Homer describes Odysseus as wise, which is a characteristic needs to help the crew escape disasters and deaths.
Shrek is a bad-tempered, green, and ugly ogre who lives happily in his own swamp. Stanley Lombardo, Robert Fagles, and Robert Fitzgerald all wrote their translations of The Odyssey in the twentieth century, yet each version varies in rhythm, style, word choice, and many other ways that can cause a significant difference in the way readers perceive the story. When looking at sections of Book I in its different translations, it becomes clear that the decisions made in each version have their flaws as well as their strengths. In the opening, for example, Lombardo and Fagles both use fewer words than Fitzgerald to write the first few lines although they basically say the same thing. Readers who only care about getting through the work in as little time as possible would most likely prefer to read either Lombardo or Fagles.
Once again, the stories of Jane and Odysseus share this stage, although Jane’s adventures are much less spectacular than Odysseus’s. The hero of The Odyssey has to defeat the cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and other powerful enemies. The hero does it by relying on his cunning, resourcefulness, and bravery. Although Jane does not have to defeat monsters, her test also requires boldness. She hides her fascination with the wallpaper because she knows John would disapprove it.

The new Marvel Movie, Black Panther, just hit the market and everyone is raving about it already. This movie hero from modern times shares the same qualities as a hero from ancient Greece; the stories of heroes use the same concepts, just with different names and settings. For example, Odysseus from Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey, shares multiple characteristics with the Black Panther. The major difference between the two is that Odysseus is struggling to go back home while Black Panther is struggling to save his home, but both concern the battle against injustice.
Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.
They do not wait for someone else to help them. They fight alone and risk their own life. The second quality they share is strength. Even though they can lose some battles, both of them show the quality of being strong.
“O Brother Where Art Thou?” is a comedy, adventure film produced in 2000. Many of the scenes in this film are based off the Odyssey, which is an epic poem by Homer. It is based on a true hero’s journey back home. There are many correlations and yet differences between the Odyssey and the film. Although the overall plot of “O Brother Where Art Thou?” is vaguely similar to the Odyssey, there are certain “episodes” that closely mirror the film’s classical influence.
Compare and Contrast: Heroism When people hear the word “hero,” Thor, X-Men, Captain America, Superman and several others may come to mind. Heroes do not have to own supernatural powers to be mighty but need to make an impact. Heroism is manifested in the actions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Beowulf by staying true to their beliefs. Nothing was able to stop their way of life.
