Throughout time, women were always supposed to be submissive to their husbands. However, at some point women, all of a sudden decided to do something to support themselves or relieve themselves from their marriages. I read two short stories about two women who had different but similar lives in their marriage. The Storm and Story of the Hour are different as whereas The Storm is about a woman who committed adultery and she lived the rest of her life happy, while Story of the Hour is about a woman who thought her husband had died but in the end, the woman died “of joy that kills.”. Similarly, as they both have guilt in their marriages, their husbands are controlling. In Story of the Hour, Mrs. Mallard finds out that her husband Mr. Mallard had died from her sister and as a result, she felt guilty, but then she loves her husband, however, she mumbles to herself “Free, free, free!”. As the literal storm approaches’ coincidentally, it leads one of the characters M’sieur Alcée to the main character Mrs. Calixta’s house while her husband and son were sheltered somewhere else. The symbolized approaching storm is when Monsieur Alcée wraps his arms around Mrs. Calixta which sparks tension between them. That leads to the author describes writing how “he had kissed her and kissed and kissed her...” which ultimately led her lying in his arms. If Mrs. Calixta ended up sleeping with another man to feel satisfied with her life (sexually) and not feel guilty. Then there is an internal conflict between her and her husband. One might conclude that he was not getting it up anymore, making her feel unloved that a simple hug from a past romance leads to sex then there is a problem. After the storm had passed she returned to her normal life as if nothing during the storm has occurred. Mrs. Calixta may be happier then she was after she slept with M’sieur
