Everyday Use and Sula are about women leaving home to find themselves. When they return both Sula and Dee find things the way they left them and very old fashioned. Sula and Dees lives are considered very unconventional in comparison to their towns and families. In the case of Sula, she was living a life that was more real to her. However, Dee is more similar to Nel because she was being hypocritical about the quilts. When she asks about taking the quilts, Mama has the thought, "I didn't want to bring up how I had offered Dee (Wangero) a quilt when she went away to college.
