Leaders There are leaders everywhere in our world today whether it be at school, work, sports, etc. Three of these great leaders include Suleiman the Magnificent, Nelson Mandela and Queen Elizabeth. These three great leaders are now glorified for what they did by using their own strategies in which they used to become successful. The first of these three leaders was a man called “Suleiman the Magnificent” by the Europeans. In 1520, Suleiman became sultan and ascended the Ottoman throne. Suleiman was feared but also admired by people. The leader always rode at the head of his army to inspire his troops as they entered battle. In a short but historic ceremony, he took the oath of office today as president of the Republic of South Africa. As the first black president of South Africa, the 75 year old pledged to build “a complete, just, and lasting peace.” He said, “The time for healing of the wounds has come.” (120) Nelson being a fan favorite, won a landslide victory. Mandela had spent 27 years in prison and suffered discrimination in all aspects of his life along with many other black South Africans. His battles against Apartheid (an official policy of racial separation) would put him in prison at the beginning of 1962. Nelson used every opportunity he had to speak out against the injustice of white domination. “I have dedicated myself to the struggle of the African people.” He declared during one of his trials. (121) This man was willing to die for what he believed in. “But, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” He said. (121) Through harsh condition, Mandela never lost his spirit or determination. By speaking out, “Free Mandela!” was demanded from people all over the world. In 1990, Mandela was released from prison and won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in 1993 along with his acquaintance, de Klerk. Although stuck in prison for so many years of his life, Nelson Mandela managed to create a revolution and end what he believed was an injustice.
