In the 1930s with the Great Depression affecting millions of people in America, it was common to see immigrant’s working on agricultural labor. John Steinbeck, a great writer of the 20s, portrays the suffering of what an immigrant agricultural worker went through better than any other writer of the time. Publish in mid 1930s, Of Mice and Men tells the story of two immigrant workers, Lennie and George, and their experience of working in the fields of Salinas Valley of northern California. Throughout the novel Steinbeck vaguely tells the readers, through the protagonist Lennie and George, an unrealistic American Dream. It comes to the question of how far-fetched was George and Lennie’s American dream?
In Of Mice and Men by author John Steinbeck two drifters named George and Lennie escaped their old farm in Weed. Now that they are on their own George tries to help Lennie get through the struggle. Although they try to achieve their dream reality might not let them. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck shows us that dreams can motivate us to work harder, but in reality dreams often shatter our hopes.
The book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck was written in the time period of the Great Depression. In this novella, people go around working from ranch to ranch in hopes of having enough money to be able to get their American dream. George and Lennie travel together and end up on a ranch with other people who were doing the same work. As they are there they realize that their dream may be easier to get than they thought and begin to put their plans of a different future in action but Lennie, not being able to understand many things, accidentally kills a girl and takes off to his hiding spot. George decides that enough was enough and he needed to stop Lennie.
“For many, the American Dream has become a nightmare,” these all too real words from Bernie Sanders reflect negatively upon the idea of the American Dream. While this quote is about modern-day America, the same idea was used in the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. There are numerous points in the story where this idea is stated. Steinbeck promotes the negatives of the American dream heavily in his story Of Mice and Men. There are various points where Steinbeck uses his character's dialogue and actions to show the impossible truth of the American Dream.
It is that fixation that keeps you up late at night, bemused. It is that hope that pesters you to try, but, when you try, you end up falling flat on your face. It is that same notion that every, “underdog” movie or book is based on. It is that phobia that haunts immigrants, to this day, to not mess up. It is that fantasy that anything can be achieved by hard work and determination.
I am discussing how in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie focus on the false reality of the American Dream rather than realizing the importance of companionship. The relationship between the two men is unusual because most farmers were lonely while George and Lennie have each other George thinks that his life would be easier without Lennie but Lennie is obsessed with an idea of comraderie. Whoever seems to achieve success, associated with the American Dream, is scrutinized, it is usually found that even though it portrays as if they have obtained so much, something still feels unaccomplished.
During the 1930´s, America was in a Great Depression and migrant farm laborers traveled to California in hopes of finding jobs and a better way of life. This is how it was for Lennie and George in the novella, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, because they traveled from job to job hoping one day they would achieve the life they dreamed of. Lennie and George are migrant workers who traveled to California looking for work so they could save up enough money to buy a small farm. They believed if they worked hard enough and saved up enough money they could have a better way of life where they would feel safe and free.
Danny Remishevsky MR. Wilson English 10 Core 1 May 2017 It was only a Dream For many migrant workers, their only possession is the dream planted in their heads, to them, it is worth more than money, it is their livelihood, their dream is what carries them to sleep and wakes them up in the morning. The dream takes them through their day and follows them as they move from workplace to workplace. They are always chasing their dream.
The main characters(george and lennie) are really close friends and have been working for a long time to achieve their dream. Every day lennie mentions the dream because that's his motivation to work. Through the story, Steinbeck reveals that having a dream is a key aspect in life and can drive you even if the dream seems impossible.
Using the novel Of Mice and Men created by John Steinbeck, I will investigate how the author feels about the idea of “The American Dream.” From the title of this book you could foreshadow how preparation and hard work might not be enough to achieve the dream that you have. Also, the two main characters, George and Lennie, are chasing their dream that always seems to be out of reach. Opposite of the optimists, was Crooks who is more of a realist who believes no matter how much you believe and try that dreams are only in your head. Even though, the characters play a major role in distinguishing Steinbeck’s message about dreams in our life.
The dream one cannot quite remember. Every time it creeps into the back of one’s mind, and one struggles to grasp it; it slips through his fingers, like sand through an hourglass. Now imagine the dream as one’s goal, a goal one has always wished to accomplish. That is what the American Dream of many of those who are belittled by society can be like. Every time they gain distance toward achieving their goal or dream, it slips through their fingers; they are unable to complete their goals or advance their position in life.
American Dream American Dream has many different definitions in this day and age. For some it 's starting from little and making their way up to a successful prosperous life. For others it 's reaching happiness and a family. And for some the American dream is freedom but however the American dream is portrayed they all have something in common and that is happiness.
Of Mice and Men, one of Steinbeck 's classic novellas, is constructed on the strange friendship between George Milton and Lennie Smalls and their journey to achieving the American Dream. On their quest, they arrive at a farm where they meet a nameless farm wife who is simply referred to as Curley 's wife. Throughout the novella she is objectified and isolated which helps develop the theme of loneliness. Because she is a woman, she is deprived of many opportunities to have dreams and goals in her life. Steinbeck crafts Curley’s wife’s character to demonstrate the role of women in the 1930’s, and to prove that women will never be able to achieve the American Dream because of the sexist society present during that time period.
The Impossibility of The American Dream Occurring in John Steinbeck’s well written book, Of Mice and Men, the story starts with migrating workers. These workers are George and Lennie - also the protagonists. The two dreamed of owning a farm in the future; although this dream was never achieved. As the author mixes imagery, foreshadowing and lots of zoomorphism to develop the story. The developed story then starts to support the theme of the Impossibility of the American Dream.
Of mice and men is a prominent book read by most high school students for a long time. Of mice and men is a book written by John Steinbeck. In the book George and Lennie had to run out of weed, so they looked for a ranch to work on. Lennie had issues with liking soft things that lead to him killing Curley's’ Wife and a puppy. To express that the american dream is impossible to achieve Steinbeck uses conversations, conflicts, and events.
