The American Dream
What is the american dream? The american dream is the idea that in the United States, a person can achieve whatever they dream, if they put the work and effort into it. The american dream is known all throughout the world. It is a big attraction for citizens from other countries to migrate to the United States in search of a better life. The book “Of Mice and Men” represents the american dream.
In the book, there are two men, who are traveling together to find work as ranch hands. George is the caretaker of the mentally retarded Lennie, who is the cause of their constant moving. The sole thing that keeps them going is the dream that they will someday have a farm of their own. They each have different reasons they want the farm, but ultimately it keeps them in a positive mindset. It is their motivation to continue the difficult life they have as ranch hands.
They believe that if they continue to work hard their dream will come true. They continue to save their money and move from job to job to hopefully eventually have a farm. The issue with the american dream is that it is not always true. Some things are unachievable for some people. People have to face discrimination for things such as race, ethnicity, and income level. These things, unfortunately, can influence how successful people are. An example is someone who comes from a lower income family is less likely to go to college as someone from a wealthy family. Lennie was discriminated against for his mental disabilities. That discrimination was projected onto George as well. His disabilities were what held them back from being able to buy their farm. They caused them to always be on the move and eventually lead to his death. Lennie’s death symbolizes the death of the american
