The short stories “The Black Cat” and “The Masque of Red Death” by Edgar Allen Poe are considered horror stories. For a story to be a horror they must be able to define certain characteristics such as being fearful, being suspenseful, being surprising, have some spoilers, and overall it should be mysterious. Since these two stories are considered horror stories they should have at least one example of each of these characteristics and they should overall be frightening to most audiences. “The Black Cat” defines each of the characteristics, the man’s wife was fearful of the cat because of the superstitions of black cats.
