Edgar Allan Poe was a writer that is known for his gothic style of writing. Poe’s short stories and poems are very popular. His work is intriguing, but also brings up questions about life itself. He uses the theme of death in a lot of his work, which is probably because of the death of his mother. He also uses color to symbolize things throughout his writings.
In the excerpts from The Black Cat and Pet Sematary, Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King fabricate their tales of horror by using the audience’s morbid curiosity and subconscious fears in their advantage to induce a sense of fear and suspense. The writers emphasize the importance of using figurative language and other literary devices to captivate the moment in the story and to keep the audience intrigued. Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King’s horror stories are deemed as relevant pieces of literary works, since many people consider that the horror genre is faltering in literature and other media, particularly in films. The authors demonstrate that through the creative use of syntax, sensory language, imagery, frightened tones, and even some allusions; they can adequately build suspense and tension. In everyday lives lots of good and bad things happen, that cannot be avoided no matter what because there meant to happen. Some examples might be car accidents, falling, winning lotteries or doing good on an exam. In the story called “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe shows how the Red Death is just inevitable to happen no matter what. Edgar expresses this by making the setting the story in a gothic tone and dreadful to portray red death.
“Lord help my poor soul.” These were the last words uttered by a delirious Edgar Allan Poe on the night of his death on October 3, 1849, wearing another man’s clothes. The mysterious circumstances surrounding Poe’s death and his tragic life reflect his often morbid, macabre, and bitter works. It is often speculated that the death of every woman in Poe’s life due to consumption, leaving him to believe he was cursed, along with his financial failures (though he did have literary success during his lifetime), may have left him unhinged. Two comparable short stories written by Poe are “The Black Cat” and “The Masque of the Red Death.”

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. Edgar lost his mother at an early age. He was then raised by a wealthy Virginia family named Allan, from whom he took his middle name. Poe uses grotesque in many different ways to build suspense and mystery. Another way Poe builds the mystery and suspense in “The Black Cat” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” is through the use of the Gothic element grotesque. In both stories Poe describes rooms or areas as grotesque to build suspense and or mystery. The narrator in “The Black Cat” puts his wife behind the wall “which the dampness of the atmosphere had prevented from hardening” (Poe 4).
Poe’s feeling toward the story “Masque of The Red Death” would be frightened. Being frightened in the story would be normal. When people read this story they want action and plenty of exciting stories. When people read this story this is what they will get. The “Masque of The Red Death” is a story about people in an apartment that find things very unusual.
The short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe is the story of a man who attempts to persuade the reader of his sanity while describing a murder he committed. “The Monkey’s Paw” is a short story by W.W Jacobs and tells the story of a family who strives to intervene with fate, the family is then forced to face the consequences of their actions. Based on the criteria of the horror genre, “The Tell-Tale Heart” is evidently classified as a horror because of Poe’s use of suspense and theme of the story. Additionally, in “The Monkey’s Paw”, Jacobs most prominently illustrates an external source of horror, making this short story another outstanding example of the horror genre. The story “The Monkey’s Paw” is a horror genre because it uses different types of literary techniques.
A horror story is a story that provides a gruesome scary story with scary imaginary and fearful settings. However, is that always the case when reading a horror story or poem? The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe is a horror poem, despite not being like one. We know it as gothic horror. The characteristics used in gothic horror are its characters, setting, theme, and wordplay, as well as being a story that readers can relate to.
Poe’s writing in the short story can be put into one category. Horror. Poe’s writing can be put into horror because throughout the story he uses fear,mystery,suspense,spoiler and surprise. Right from the beginning he uses spoiler when he says “ I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him. ”Also in the end he says “Villains!,Dissemble no more!
The book “The Tell-Tale Heart” written by Edgar Allen Poe creates a feeling of horror because the old man is alone in the dark. Poe’s story is a horror story because of the setting, suspense, and elements of the supernatural. The story “The Tell-Tale Heart” is a horror story is because of the setting. The setting in this short story takes place in the old man's room that was “as black as pitch with the thick darkness” as described on page 90 on lines 51 and 52. When readers think of spooky houses at midnight, they usually think about horror because things always happen at midnight because the lighting is

“The Black Cat” Everyone has had bad luck from time to time before, some people say that bad luck can come from salt spilling over, a black cat walking under a ladder. In the story “The Black Cat” the author, Edgar Allan Poe, takes this belief and blows the whole idea out of the water and into something different from the usual bad luck. The main protagonist, or the narrator in this case, goes through having bad luck throughout the entire story but this isn’t the same kind of bad luck that regular people would experience. This bad luck leads to him killing his wife and his own home burning down. Edgar Allan Poe uses foreshadowing and symbolism to show the character’s actions in “The Black Cat.”
The author’s puspose in “The Black Cat” is to demonstrate the relationship and the signification between the character and the cat. The character has had many pets throughout his life but his black cat was his most favorite pet. He used to love the black cat when he was younger but as time passed by, he began to detest the cat. As he was getting older he became an alcoholic and started to become more aggressive towards his loved ones especially the cat. He burned down his house, murdered his wife, and took one eye out of his cat.
People have always tried to avoid death, but they cannot. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” the characters are trying to avoid the Red Death, but they do not succeed. Every hour clock chimes indicating that life is passing by and death is close.
