How did it affect the African American Religious structure? (Chapter 7) The Black Power and Pride Movement shift the Black Church from the message of oppression to the theme of freedom, which is known as “liberation theology.” It helped the church to realize that African Americans were no longer enslaved as a race of people. The Black Power and Pride Movement changed the image of the African American Religious structure into a deep religious symbolic significance among all sectors of the African American population. Freedom meant freedom from all forms of racial oppression (Lincoln, 3163 Kindle Edition). We were liberated to a new chant of “Freedom now”, even in the civil rights movement, our songs, sermons, as well as, our speeches. What is Black Liberation Theology and how does it influence the Black Consciousness? (Chapter 7) Surly, Black Liberation Theology was not new, but it open the mindsets of African Americans to envision their God, just as other races had envisioned God. They could make God in their image as an African American (a black God). They could also ask the question, “Why should not the Negro believe that he resembles God as much as other people?” It open up new views, ideas of God or Jesus, in which, that influenced the Black Consciousness to be to view and interpreted God from their own experience and social status. It was no longer a dream, but a reality of “Freedom Now” The Black Church became the first independent economic and sociopolitical sphere among African Americans and a liberated place for the African American communities and their
