Theme is a discussion, discourse, meditation, or composition;topic. “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and “Feathers” both have a character that learned not to lie. There is a common theme in the text “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and “Feathers.” In “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” a boy tricked the villagers by lying to them saying there was a wolf, but when there was a wolf and the boy needed help none of the villagers came. The villagers had lost their trust from the boy since he lied to them. In “Feathers” a woman started a rumor, so the rabbi cut open a pillow and told her to get every feather. In “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” a boy got bored while watching sheep so he yelled there was a wolf knowing the villagers would come. He did this twice but the third time he saw a wolf and when he yelled wolf the villagers didn’t believe him because he lied. The text states, “We’ll help you look for the lost sheep in the morning,” he said, putting his arm around the youth, “Nobody believes a liar...even when he is telling the truth!”(par 11). This shows that the boy thought what he was doing was funny until he actually needed help. Through this experience the little boy learned you shouldn’t lie and this ties in with the theme that actions have consequences. Likewise, in “Feathers” a woman started a rumor and the rumor spread. The rabbi cut open a pillow and told her to go get all the feathers and while doing this she realized that she couldn’t get the feathers back just like she couldn’t take back her words. The text states, “Facing the rabbi, she said, “I could not take back the feathers any more than I could take back my words. From now on I will be careful not to say anything that would harm another, for there is no way to control the flight of words, any more than I could control the flight of these feathers.” From that day, the woman spoke kindly of all she had met”(par 7). When she was brought before the village rabbi, she said, “I was only joking. My words were spread by others, and so I am not to blame”(par 1).
