In the novel The Catcher in The Rye, by J.D Salinger, the main character Holden goes through a tough time and struggles to figure out his identity. He doesn’t want to grow up and doesn't want to become an adult, but he feels like he has little choice. In the novel The Awakening, by kate Chopin, the main character Edna has similar struggles as Holden. She is not like the rest of the women around her, she gets drunk and doesn't want to enter the real world and wants to get away from everyone so she can do what she wants to do. In these two novels the characters feel that they need to get away from everyone and they feel like they need to do something else.In the novel Catcher in The Rye,by J.D Salinger, the main character holden wants to get away from everything. He starts this by running away and heads west. He tells Phoebe that he wants to be the catcher in the rye. During this point of thee book he is starting to feel less depressed. He starts to realize that children have to live their own lives and that adults must let them do that. He starts to realize that he must grow up and he is ready to go home and collapse. Holden doesn't want to become an adult but enjoys doing things adults do. Whenever he is upset or just not feeling right he will smoke or go out to the bars and have a drink. He is not old enough to drink but because of his size sometimes he is able to get a drink. This helps him get over his emotions and forgets the struggles during that time. Even though he doesn't seem too excited for these things it helps him cope. Edna goes to the racing track and bets on horse. And everytime she goes down she is intoxicated because of he success on betting on the horses. She feels as this is where she needs to be and doesn't want to come back to reality to join the real
