When reading about the three themes given for this week’s assignment, I found two themes very interesting. In the first theme, I read about two early female explorers by the names Jeanne Baret and Hester Stanhope. Jeanne Baret was born in a poor family but was the first woman in history to travel the world. The thing that was very interesting about this female explorer was that she travel all over the world dressed as a man. She was able to use lined bandages to wrap around her upper body so that she could flatten her chest like a man’s. Not only was Jeanne an explorer, but she was also very good at botany. In fact she was an expert botanist She was known as herb women. Jeanne did have a husband who she met while collecting plants in a field. Her husband was hired as a person to set sail to discover new territories. Women were not allowed on French Navy ships and in order for her to be his assistant he dressed her as a man. Because Jeanne was disguised as a man no one really knew what she did besides her husband. I think that although no one realized what she did, she did place a mark for female explorers. Hester Stanhope was another women who was an early female explorer. Unlike Jeanne, Hester was born in the rich. She was a woman in history who went on an archeological journey. She was a great British traveler and an archeologist. When reading about Hester, I found that she was not beautiful woman and she dressed in men’s clothing.
