Comparing The Christian Creation And The Iroquois Creation Myth

All cultures and religions have a beginning. The land, water, people, and animals had to be created somehow. The myths of creation varies widely from culture to culture, however, in some instances there are similarities between the cultures and their beliefs. Despite the many differences, creation myths of the Iroquois, Navajo, and Christian people all contain archetypical elements and symbolism that make each of them unique, such as the different characters and developments that show that despite the many differences, there can also be some similarities. He created light from his mothers body into the dark world. The bad mind was devious and evil. He created things to undermine his brothers work such as steep mountains, reptiles, and falls to injure people. Both myths also have the sun, the earth, and animals. Also, both myths have the defeat of evil and triumph of good, because good always prevails. In the Iroquois myth, the bad mind offers a challenge to his brother, the good mind, to resolve which of the two would control the universe. The good mind beat the bad mind and repaired the earth, taught the people how to live, and retired from the earth. In the christian myth, Cain worked the land and soil and Abel watched over and worked the flocks of sheep and other animals. They went to bring God gifts and Cain brought gifts of fruit and Abel brought gifts of fat from the flock. The Lord favored Abel's gifts over Cain's and this made him angry so he killed Abel over jealousy. The myths also elaborate on how they each believe animals were created and put on the earth.
