From its onset with its first feature-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, Disney has grown to become a worldwide phenomenon today. But over the years, various parent groups, scholars and film critics have accused Disney for creating shallow, stereotypical princesses whose ultimate aim was to find her 'prince charming ' and live happily ever after. When reading Anne Sexton and the Grimm’s versions of the tale the reader may begin to be very disappointed and think there has to be more to Snow White than her “China-blue doll eyes” (Schacker et al., 386). Even her name, Snow White, is nothing more than a simple description of her appearance. The dwarves and prince in the story see her as nothing more than pretty to look at. They even refer to her as an “it” in several instances; for example, in the Grimm’s version of the tale, it says, “But the dwarfs answered, ‘We won’t give it up for all the gold in the world.’” (Schacker et al.,
The movie “Ever After” by Andy Tennant, and The short story Cinderella by Perrault, are both very different takes on the story of Cinderella. Perrault’s version of the story is the story that most of us have grown up with. It’s captivating and magical, but also it’s very one-dimensional, with a “magic pumpkin” and a “fairy godmother”. While, Tennant’s version is by far more realistic in nature, there is no magic pumpkin, but there is a prince who becomes her husband, an evil stepmother, and a pretty, kind hearted girl who slaves away doing as her stepmother demands. The “fairy godmother” does not randomly appear from no where, in “Ever After”, instead she is replaced by the great inventor Leonardo Da Vinic.
“Always be a good girl, and I will look down from heaven and watch over you.” (Page 1) The Disney Cinderella was released on February 15th, 1950 but the tale told by The Grimm Brothers is a different twist on the Disney classic movie; instead of a fairy godmother and sweet, little mice running around, The Grimm Brothers wrote about a tree growing on Cinderellas mothers’ grave and with the help of tiny birds, every wish Cinderella makes comes true. The violent version of Cinderella by the Grimm Brother explains the struggle she faced trying to get away from her stepsisters but also keeping her humble and kind side looking for true love.
Disney, alike many other popular storytellers, want these known stories to be friendly, animated, and with an intended audience of children. This is ironic because a retired professor of German and comparative literature from the University of Minnesota, Jack Zipes, directly compares this theme to a news interviewer that “the Grimm’s did not collect these tales for children. They collected these tales to show what life was like. And they wanted to reveal what they considered the divine truths of the tales.” It is obvious that Disney does not have the same motive as the Grimm’s did.
Science and studies have shown that on this planet, human is the only species that’s really not afraid of horror. While, others species run away from a horror act or scene, human with their curiosity, actually want to see and run toward it. There is something about horror, which makes a person draws into it, craves it, and always try to find new ways that can satisfied his or her need of “horror addiction”. Films such as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” and “Cinderella” are two of their earlier movies that are vastly different, but share similarities as well. For instance, both Cinderella and Snow White are beautiful princesses that are forced to be maids and have similar antagonists in their stories, which are evil step mothers who are jealous of their step daughter 's beauty.

This is as much a fairy tale convention as it is a gender expectation for women to be beautiful and silent. However, this wasn’t as much as a gender expectation in the 1800s as it is today. Cinderella’s father does not appear to be home as much as the stepmother, and this illustrates the type of work and expectations for women’s and men’s jobs in the 1800s. The father is probably commuting to work, and this is evident through the fact that he never sees the cruelty experienced by Cinderella.
The core of the story has become very flexible in terms of how it can be portrayed. In the article, “A Girl, A Shoe, A Prince: The Endlessly Evolving Cinderella”, the author, Linda Holmes, talks about the durability of the story when she states “All it takes is a girl and a dress and a shoe; people get it. There are countless versions” (11). Holmes gives many examples of stories and movies that have portrayed the Cinderella Story. She stressed the work “countless” in her arguments to emphasize how far this folk tale has come.
The Disney version of the story of Cinderella is loosely based off of the original short story written by the Grimm brothers. It follows the basic plot of the original story. The differences between the two lie mainly in the details of the story. The Disney version is milder, leaving out the more gruesome details form the book. The story is simplified to make it enjoyable for the children who watch it.
