Young Adult literature has often been disregarded by literary critics due to its consideration as a subdivision of children’s literature. Consequently, causing the lack of literary analysis and evaluation of said novels . The Fault In Our Stars by the American author John Green and All Those Things We Never Said by the French author Marc Levy contain the description and the characterization of an American family as a principal issue throughout the development of the plot in both novels. Consequently, the following research question derives from the difference of the origin of both authors:
To what extent does the author’s cultural background affect the author’s characterization of an American family in “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green and “All Those Things We Never Said” by Marc Levy? Green exposes a plot with “A blend of melancholy, sweet, philosophical and funny” throughout the narration in first person of Hazel Grace Lancaster’s life as a seventeen-year-old terminal lung cancer patient. Thus, the main theme discussed and detailed throughout the plot is Hazel’s fear of oblivion caused by her own death. Ultimately, Green is able to produce a less complex and effective existentialist literary work similar to previously published novels by distinguished authors such as Albert Camus and Franz Kafka.
