Dystopia is a popular genre in which authors write about a fictional society that is perceived to be perfect and ideal by the vast majority of the people in it. Authors must intrigue the reader, and this is difficult because they have to somehow illustrate a future that is vaguely similar to ours. However, it has to be completely fictional, which makes it tough to formulate realistic storylines. Nevertheless, these authors use literary elements to counter these difficulties and produce realistic characters and you can see this when Ray Bradbury, Ayn Rand, and James Dashner use symbolism in their respected novels, Fahrenheit 451, Anthem, and The Maze Runner. This literary technique gives Dystopian Literature the uniqueness and adds the key elements to make the story flow.
Over break I read two books “The running Dream” and “The Lost Deer Camp. ”At the beginning of break I read “The Running Dream” it is about a teen girl named Jessica who loves to run. Than one day on her way back home with her track team on the bus, the bus gets hit. Jessica ends up losing her right leg up to right below her knee cap. Jessica didn’t know what to do, as she slowly got better, she started to wonder if she would ever get to run again.
Allegory of the Cave, a short story by renowned philosopher Plato, describes the life of prisoners chained inside of a cave where all the knowledge they receive is given by unknown strangers behind them. It continues to elaborate on their transition from a lackluster world where they were truly in the dark to one that completely surpasses all expectations. Likewise, Stranger Than Fiction, a movie written by Zach Helm, illustrates an IRS auditor, Harold Crick, that is shackled by his mundane lifestyle and also has an embodied voice that seems to be controlling his life. The movie goes on to describe his arduous journey toward finding the woman behind the voice, which ultimately gives him a new perspective on life. Zach Helm’s screenplay Stranger Than Fiction and Plato’s Allegory of the Cave both describe the experience of a person escaping limited perspective darkness and discovering a more complex world than they had previously thought existed.
Memories “Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose”(Arnold). In the book a long way gone a boy named Ishmael beah tells his story. In this novel Ishmael’s village is eventually raided and he becomes on his own. Through being on his own he thinks of the past and memories of a better life. These memories that he thinks of can hinder him and help him along the way through his journey.
While some differences between Blade Runner and Frankenstein are evident the similarities are quite clear. In both works the common theme is the hubris of man and how we try to play god and change nature. One of the main differences between these works is the time in which they take place. Frankenstein is the story of Victor Frankenstein who in his youth and arrogance believes he can play god and reanimate the dead. To this end he builds a giant monstrous cadaver of different parts that he recovered from other bodies, he assembles this and uses lightning to try to reanimate it.

Along with this, he warns that though memories and memorials can be helpful for the remembrance of people and events, they can also manipulate people’s perspectives and even erase certain memories from a narrative. D’Agata depicts memories, specifically through memoirs, as powerful and able to connect and inspire communities.
The book, The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, is a book with a lexile of 770, filled with excitement, suspense and sadness. the maze runner movie was released approximately 5 years after the publication of the book. If you liked the movie, then the book would be the choice of your kind, though it’s a bit different. It’s easy to understand also, with a mix of different climaxes occurring throughout the book. The main character Thomas, unconscious and confused, woke up in The Box with people hovering over him in a place of 4 huge walls in a shape of a square.
This was a very enjoyable book full of mystery and adventure. The Maze Runner is about a boy named Thomas who wakes up in a box, scared and alone and remember anything except for his first name. When he gets out he is surrounded by other boys of different ages, in a place called the Glade which no one has ever gotten out of because it is surrounded by a large maze that changes everyday. At first Thomas has to do jobs that he hates like gardening and cleaning the slaughter house. Thomas can't remember anything but he knows he has to be a runner.
¨I dystopian futures are also a reflection of current fears( Lauren Oliver)¨. The reason that they all live in these dystopian societies is because they fear that the future holds. This shows that they fear what is going to happen so they have all these rules that the people don 't want to follow but because it is punishable by death they do, but there is always the ones who don 't. Both novels are very popular and will be for quite some time. Dystopian literature is so popular among the teens because they are all alike that makes them more appealing to the readers. Both Anthem and Divergent are both very popular among the younger ages.
It is crazy to think how pop culture can point to the things it works so hard to reject, but in the case of Divergent by Veronica Roth, parallels between it and the gospel abound. Divergent is set in a dystopian Chicago in which the citizens are divided into 5 factions; the brave, the selfless, the intelligent, the honest and the kind. The story follows Tris Prior, a sixteen year old girl who realizes her Divergence, or possession of characteristics of more than one faction. The novel and film adaption of Divergent include many similarities to the gospel, notably the emphasis on a choice of commitment, the concept that we need more than one characteristic to grow, that salvation is brought about through sacrifice, and that humankind is at its heart, evil.
Running the Maze Imagine being trapped inside of a place with no memory of how you got there and the only way to get out was through a maze. James Dashner’s young adult, science fiction novel, The Maze Runner is about just that. There were a brunch of themes in the novel but the most important ones were maintaining rules and orders, making sacrifices, never giving up, and manipulation, even though something may look simple it might be harder than it seems. All these themes were practiced by Thomas and other Gladers in the Glade. Dashner also wrote the sequels to the Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials and Death Cure.
