Counselors have four ways to gather information and two interviewing forms they can use to collect information from the couple. The first way a counselor can gathering information is through an initial intake, which help the counselor gathering information about the couple’s history, presenting problem, reasons why they are in need of counseling, and their upbringing and family. The initial intake will give the counselor an idea of the couple’s early social world.
A second way to gathering information on the couple is through a referral if the client had been in counseling previously. The counselor will need the couple to sign a release of information to get the information from their previous counselor. This information will allow the counselor to see what type of work the couple has done with counselors in the past, which this will allow the counselor to see what has work in the past and try to …show more content…

The final approach a counselor can use to collect information about the couple is through a lifestyle assessment. This lifestyle assessment is usually created after the early recollections, which these recollections are summarized and interpreted. After the counselor is finish summarizing and interpreting this will give the counselor an idea on how they want to approach therapy for the couple.
Counselors also use two interview forms to help them gather information about the couple these two forms of interviewing is subject and objective. The counselor will use subjective interviewing which help the counselor explore the couple’s dynamics. The counselor will use the skill of active listening so they can hear the couple tell their complete story in their own words. Objective interviewing is like the initial intake, which the counselor through this form of interviewing can collect information on why the couple is seeking
