“The world of full of hurts and mischances without wars to multiply them.” (Tolkien Pg.) This quote comes from the final book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. This fantasy fictional series is written by J.R.R. Tolkien and takes place decades after the Hobbit. Both pieces take place in fictional Middle Earth. The world is riddled with humanoid creatures such as dwarves, elves, hobbits, and wizards. Creatures of nightmare also litter the realm such as orcs and trolls. Before the fellowship of the ring was created, Bilbo Baggins went on an adventure to reclaim Erebor, the captive mountain of dwarves. Aragorn comes from the line of kings and is willing to fight for his unclaimed kingdom. Frodo, Merry, Pippin, and Samwise are hobbits from the Shire who followed Frodo on his quest of the ring. Gimili is a dwarf from Erebor, son of the original company with Bilbo. Legolas is an elf, prince of Mirkwood.
When we return to our characters in the third book, war swings into full effect. Sauron is fighting for control of a lost-long kingdom assumed to be his. While Gondor fights for the right to peace. The majority of the book the characters are in the west, marching between Gondor, Rohan, and Mordor. The company that set out, in the beginning, is split. Samwise and Frodo slowly make their way to Mordor, planning to destroy the ring. Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimili, Legolas, Merry and Pippin ride alongside kings and armies in hopes of winning the war against Mordor. The story begins with Merry and Pippin making the decision to ride two kingdoms to help their armies. Merry rides beside the king of Rohan and Pippin soon becomes a night under Gondor's steward. However, the two are soon reunited under the air of battle while Gondor is under siege. The rest of the company is soon also together again, and leaders of the west decide to throw all their weight at Mordor. Their army is significantly smaller than the host of Mordor, and they march against all
