Centuries ago, the first Olympic Games were held. On 776 BC, men gather together to compete in a series of games to honor the Greek God, Zeus. These games began in the city of Olympia. There were five different games the men could compete in to honor their very important God. Some of these games included jumping, discus, wrestling, boxing, and horse riding. The athletes did not wear anything, and usually covered themselves in oil. For this reason, women were not allowed to attend the events. The events were hold in a large open area, with a long track that was used in most of the events. They started in Athens, at a place called Olympia. Today, the games are held in many different places. Some of these include Paris, Barcelona and Tokyo. There are many differences and similarities between the old Olympics and the new modern day Olympics. These include the games, traditions and people that were allowed to participate in these series of event.
At the first Olympic Games, only men were allowed to join. The games were held on August and September every four years. The word Olympic came from the root word “Olympiad” meaning the spaces between years in the games. Although later on the games took about four or five days to complete, it started out as only one day. They soon realized that wasn't enough time for all the games to be completed. In the beginning, some of the games held included boxing, wrestling, and a pentathlon. There was also some other special games that were made for military men. While performing these games, the men did not wear clothes.
It was not until the 1900s that women could complete in the Olympics. They started out getting involved by entering horses into the horse races. Many women had successful horses and won many events, but were usually not present when the horse was awarded winner. Then the women started to participate in their own games.
