In the story of the Orphan Boy and the Elk Dog we could clearly see what the universal theme is for this story. The theme is that anyone could be a hero regardless if you are not strong or brave like those typical hero traits. No one said that to be able to become a hero you need all those traits, you could be a hero for just being the way you are.
The story takes place in a part of North America, it explains the origin of an important part of the North American Blackfeet culture-horses. In the story we see that the main character is an orphan boy who is deaf named Long Arrow, because he could not hear people speaking to him, many people thought he was a foolish young boy. They brought many different kinds of foods and animals from Spain, and one of the many things they brought was the horse. After two centuries horses was taken all over the continent, and most Indian tribes had taken pride in these horses.
Although there was no Indian name for horse, most of the natives refer to these animals as big magical creatures similar to dogs. It was usually named Elk Dog, Spirit Dog, Scared Dog, or Moose Dog.
In the story many people thought that Elk Dogs were very powerful and magical, something that only the chosen ones could capture them. So that’s why Good Running wanted Long Arrow to find these magical creatures and bring them back, to show to those who once shunned him, that he could also do great things. Also the story tells that you had to overcome many trials to be able to obtain this treasure, meaning that only the bravest and strongest could find the Elk Dogs. And how the weak ones who tried to find the Elk Dogs never return, saying that it was a long journey, and those who couldn’t make it didn’t want to come back because they didn’t want to be
