The focus of Consumer Health is to enable patients, families, caregivers, and the general public to find current, reliable, and accessible health information. HMO’s require that all members must choose their primary care physician. The only way you can see a specialist if you are with HMO is to have your PCP to give you and referral. This means that you cannot just go to the specialist and say you want a test without approval first from the HMO. There is a fixed monthly fee to the members so that they can receive services. The ineffective services are that members will have to pay out of pocket if the care that they receive is not an emergency or they did not get a referral for services. Members are stuck to one primary care physician. They do not have the freedom of choice like the PPO has. HMO member PCP can change if their managed care’s plan changes. PPO’s you are able to keep the same PCP even if the doctor is not in network. HMO is not very effective in cost of premiums to its members.
