This highlighted in ‘I Barn Owl’ where the use of emotive language, “I watched, afraid/ …, a lonely child who believed death clean/ and final, not this obscene”, emphasises the confronting nature of death for a child which is further accentuated through the use of enjambment which conveys the narrator’s distress. In contrast, ‘II Nightfall’, the symbolism of life as a “marvellous journey” that comes to an end when “night and day are one” reflects the narrator’s more refined and mature understanding of mortality. Furthermore the reference to the “child once quick/to mischief, grown to learn/what sorrows,… /no words, no tears can mend” reaffirms the change in the narrator’s perspective on death through the contrast of a quality associated with innocence, “mischief”, with more negative emotions associated with adulthood, “sorrows”.
These both show that even against seemingly impossible odds you can still thrive and overcome any hardship and grow into a successful and honorable person. This quote from “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury helps to tell the overall tone from “The Veldt” and “Puppy” by George Sanders involving the author’s perception on parenting. The parents’ actions after the change from them caring for their children to the nursery caring for them shows that they are scared of the change. The parents are scared that there are going to be further changes to their family and want to change it back to before the nursery. However, some disagree with this theme and say that the main theme of the story is abandonment. They say this because there are many points in the story which showcase abandonment. The children’s actions also support the theme of people are scared of change.

Due to the first stanza, it already proves that the mother has no care for her child. With the proof of the lack of care for her child indicates that the mother is lying to the neighbour. The neighbour suspects that there is some underlying cause to the child’s injuries. The suspicious neighbour says that she saw her child climb up her “maple with the sureness of a cat.” There’s no way that with the cautious behaviour of a cat the child “trips in his room, cracks his skull on the bedpost, smacks his cheeks on the floor.”
Throughout “Incarnations of Burned Children”, David Foster Wallace uses symbolism, diction and syntax to foreshadow the story’s ending.
