Circumstances In comparing “The Storm” and” The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin they’re alike in many ways. I believe circumstance plays a big role in these stories. Both women are unfaithful to husbands as the stories unfold you will see endings that are tragic and happy. In the Storm the circumstance is “the storm” without it none of the events would have took place. The story is about an affair between Calixta and Alcee, who are both married, the sexual tension between the Calixta and Alcee mirror the storm that was occurring. Calixta and Alcee are both married to other people and were attracted to each other, and knew each other in past. They both treat spouses better after the affair. “The story of an Hour” is the story of an hour in life of Mrs. Louise Mallard. As the story begins, it lets us know that Mrs. Mallard has heart trouble. Her sister Josephine, and Richard her husband’s best friend go to Mrs. Mallard after he heard of a railroad disaster that has resulted in death of Mr. Mallard. Both are concerned that the news will make Mrs. Mallard ill so Josephine is careful to tell her the news of his death. Mallard is a young woman with heart trouble. She breaks down after hearing the news that her husband has died. She goes upstairs to her room and looks out window. Mallard finally realizes she is set free and can live for herself. “She said it over and over under her breath: “Free, free, free!”(Chopin “The Story of an Hour” 65) Her happiness is short-lived .In the end her husband returns without any idea about the accident. As for Mrs. Mallard she dies instantly after seeing him “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease-- of joy that kills”.(Chopin “The Story of an Hour” 66) The story is a tragedy, Mrs. Mallard is being unfaithful to her dead husband because she feels free from his
