Fayette County Writing Assignment After reading “The Violin” and “Jing-Mei Woo: Two Kinds” it is evident that these two stories differ from each other in many ways such as the tone being used by the speakers, and the word choice as well. As a whole, they show the asian culture and what it’s like from certain perspectives. In the first story, “The Violin”, the mom is the speaker and tries to help her daughter, Lulu, become better at violin even though it comes off as annoying to her. In the second story, “Jing-Mei Woo: Two Kinds”. the intensity of the asian culture proves to be much stronger and vastly different compared to the first story. There is a major conflict between the mother and daughter that goes above and beyond sheer annoyance. …show more content…

An example of this is when she says “RELAX!” I screamed at home. “Mr. Shugart said RAG DOLL!” (Chua). This causes Lulu to get annoyed and respond back “Stop it, Mommy. Just stop it” (Chua). The tone in “Jing-Mei Woo: Two Kinds” is angry and even hateful In this passage, it does not seem like Amy Tan, the speaker and daughter, shares the same affection with her mother. She even screams “Then I wish I weren’t your daughter, I wish you weren’t my mother” (Tan). Which the mother then replies “Too late to change this”
