One significant lesson learned by the characters in “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” and “I Escaped a Violent Gang” is courage. In the “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” the kids of the town show courage by fighting for their rights even when they know they can be put in jail. In the memoir “I Escaped a Violent Gang” Ana shows courage by turning a gang member into the police to help her family and herself. Even though they have the same themes, the characters’ actions are different in the risk that they take. In the play,“The Watsons Go To Birmingham” , the author shows us that the kids throughout the play have courage. In the beginning, the Watsons Moved from Birmingham to Flint, Michigan. But when they find out that Birmingham got bombed they load up their car and drive to Grandma Sands house.This shows courage because they left Birmingham because of the segregation problems, but they went back to be with their family and help out around town. When they got there they realized that kids from all over the town were protesting for their rights. “The first day was great. About 1,000 kids went to jail that night.... In “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” the kids risk getting put in jail while fighting for their rights.Every time there was a protest, kids would be arrested.However, the kids didn’t care because they wanted what they wanted no matter the risks. But, in “I Escaped a Violent Gang” Ana is risking her life by telling the truth to the judge about Paco. She knew that if she told the truth, there was a chance that the gang members would kill her. But she followed through and risked her life for her family.Even with these risks Ana and the kids still do what they have to do for themselves and others that they care
