In a speech by Corretta Scott King he gives statistics on the matters of low income households. He states, “Despite repeated denials from the president himself, [Reagan] administration cuts have been targeted to families of moderate and low income. . . . Half of American families—those with incomes of less than $20,000 a year—have suffered 70 percent of President Reagan's budget cuts. . . . many Americans are no better off today than they were four years ago because Reagan's “unfair policies” have curtailed their freedom” (Scott King 1985).
Even though many federal officials understood that black sharecroppers (a resident farmer who gives a part of each crop as rent payment) were hit pretty harshly during the Great Depression, African Americans around 60 percent were denied access to unemployment insurance, government grants, social security benefits, elderly poor assistance, and so on. Any woman or wife would do this to protect their husband, or the person they love. The ad is using plain-folk propaganda to show that Nancy Reagan is a wife like any other. She is simply protecting her husband from someone who is causing harm. Later in the ad Nancy hints that no person should vote for someone who blatantly puts down another. This could have led more women and wives to vote for Reagan because he represents a husband just like any other.
It is obvious that only the kids want welfare but, why is that? Rose Mary states, “Once you go on welfare, it changes you. Even if you get off welfare, you never escape the stigma that you were a charity case” (188). This statement from her tells the reader her why to not accepting welfare. In this sense welfare is symbolizing negativity and disservice to the family.
Franklin Roosevelt’s administration’s responses to the problem of the Great Depression were in the consideration of reform, relief, and recovery-the New Deal-which created programs that have lasted to modern times, increased government powers, and relief to many unemployed Americans, however, it’s clear that certain minorities, women and African Americans, were often excluded from these benefits. Conditions for work may be better than Barbara’s experience; however, the American dream still is not attained by many families. Families in need are offered and provided WIC and food stamps for aid, but these limited aids do not always fully assist unemployed poorer families. Like back during Barbara’s investigation, the “working poor” are still frowned upon by many of the more fortunate and poverty still fights through, making itself known throughout the nation.
Welfare America, home of the brave, the free, and the blessed! In this country many programs have been established to help those in need. One of these programs is welfare. Welfare is a public assisting aid, which gives citizens who live in the minimal level of poverty free money. This program is funded from the taxes payed by all working Americans.
In the article “How I Discovered the Truth about Poverty” Barbara Ehrenreich gives her view in poverty and explains why she think Michael Harington’s book “The Other American” gives a wrong view on poverty. She explained that Harrington believes that the poor thought and felt differently and what divides the poor was their different “culture of poverty.” Ehrenreich goes on to explain on how the book that became a best seller caused so many bad stereotypes on the poor that by the Reagan era poverty was seen as “bad attitudes” and “faulty lifestyles” and not by the lack of jobs or low paying jobs. And they also viewed the poor as “Dissolute, promiscuous, prone to addiction and crime, unable to “defer gratification,” or possibly even set an alarm clock.”
Johnson (LBJ) created a “welfare” system, much like that in Great Britain, that also provided direct relief to the poor within the country. Inspired by FDR and his New Deal, LBJ sought to not only address poverty within the country but also the racial inequality in poverty as well. Termed the “Great Society”, its legislation was his administration’s attempt to “go to war” against poverty. LBJ’s Great Society was a series of legislation and programs to combat the still growing poverty issue in the country but unlike the New Deal; it came during a time of prosperity not depression (Foner, 415). Unlike FDR, LBJ was not a wealthy political leader from an affluent American family.

It’s understandable that people will get fired or let go sometimes but they shouldn’t just be handed money until they die. I think that welfare should only be a temporary fix, like it was intended to be, not a life-long thing. Unemployed citizens should only be able to receive welfare check for a short period of time, long enough for them to be able to find a job.
