In the horrific and altered world of the novels called “The Year of the Flood” by Margaret Atwood and “The Walking Dead” by Robert Kirkman, authors show the many faces of femininity through different characters and distinctive overpowering atmospheres by males. Both novels are dealing with the end of the world crisis as in Margaret Atwood’s book the human race is dying off from the virus and power is going to the wrong hands and the laws are beginning to change which is effecting the norm. Atwood expresses very well how the lives of women are changed and affected. While in Kirkman’s novel, zombies are wiping out the human race with only a number of humans left with authority wiped out, people start to take things in their hands to go on about everyday life. Her struggles, fears and how she is dealing with them is really bringing her character out. Toby is different from the other characters; she is really quick to adapt to new environments. Right away, when, she realizes things are changing and “this was [going] to be the Waterless Flood the gardeners” (Atwood,7) were warning everyone about, Toby is deciding she needs to somehow prepare for the mob and terror attacks. Being an independent and strong woman she is realizing “she [needs] [a] rifle” (Atwood,7) in order to protect herself. She never is asking for help but, just to get by she ends up selling her hair and Toby also sells her eggs to the point where “she [can] never donate anymore eggs or incidentally - have any children” (Atwood,32). In a way she is giving up her femininity by selling parts of herself to companies. Also, when she’s moving from her house to a really low graded apartment and having a lousy job, Toby is still managing to pull through. This is showing Toby’s character to be a very self-reliant woman who does not need anyone to feel bad for her or help her
