The use of pathos in the author’s argumentative essay is not as apparent or equally used. Webley’s lack of emotional connection to her readers limits the impact of her writings effect on her audience. Many make decisions based off of their emotional connection or response to a certain situation through pathos, because it has the ability and power to have a larger and more meaningful impact on a vast majority. Pathos is generally known as the emotion and imagination of a writing piece. With the author’s tone, it leads to causing a reaction from the audience. It causes the audience to think ahead and they either agree or disagree. Some stronger than others of course. The part of the writing that results in emotions is the very last paragraph.
Pathos is a tool used to convince people with an argument that will have an emotional response. To use pathos in his argument he needed something that would spark an anger, fear, or happiness. This whole article is going to create an emotion for the reader. The first glace of pathos being used in this article is right in the first paragraph. The author says, “If we keep it up, the U.S. will eventually be little more than the big, dumb jock on the world stage—good for entertainment on the weekend, but not taken seriously otherwise” (Salzberg 1).
1. Pathos is a term which appeals to emotion. It convinces an audience by creating feelings that already reside in them. Pathos is presented in the opening of “ A New Perspective” written by Janice E. Fein when the narrator talks about going to kindergarten. She mentions how her mother “is walking me to kindergarten” which appeals to the audience since it brings up memories of how their mother or father must have walked them to kindergarten too.
White uses pathos in her piece by appealing to her audience's emotions, the audience being college grads. This applies to the rhetorical appeal of pathos, which is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response. Throughout her whole article, White focuses on getting inside the readers of college grads feelings. When college graduates are reading this piece, White wants them to understand why they aren't getting hired and what skills they lack. In the Michael Moore's movie Capitalism: A Love Story, there is much use of the device pathos. An example in the film of pathos would be, when the Michael Moore highlights the concept of the “American dream” that's works hard for what they have only for the bank to take everything away because it would benefit them. Michael Moore proved his point because during the film a family lost their home and were living in a big van. The van had two couches and 1 sofa and there were about 5 people living inside the van. The banks took away their house that the family had worked hard for over 15 years in order to make more money.
