The idea of fiction revealing truth is present in almost every work of fiction . There is always at least one aspect of the story that can be applied to real life. The stories “The Things They Carried”, “The Little Prince”, and “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald all prove this point. By reflecting on each story it becomes evident that fiction reveals truth through lessons that can be applied to real life. Tim O’Brien shows that each person carries different materials with them and that it represents their personality. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry uses the princes rose to show that in reality people should appreciate what they have instead of looking for the best rose, the prince took a rose and decided that it was the best for him. He tries to impress her as well as everyone who knows of his legacy with his big house and lavish lifestyle. In general, an author uses fictional characters to reveal life lessons that can be applied to anyone. In the things they carried Tim O'Brien writes about how every soldier carries slightly different equipment for example the machine gunner Henry Dobbins is exceptionally large, for example, he carries extra rations. Ted Lavender carries marijuana and tranquilizers to calm himself down, and the religious Kiowa carries an illustrated New Testament, a gift from his father. This fictional story is showing the differences that each and every person has. Additionally, some things the men carry are universal, like a compress in case of fatal injuries and a two-pound poncho that can be used as a raincoat, groundsheet, or tent. Most of the men are common, low-ranking soldiers and carry a standard M16 assault rifle and several magazines of ammunition as well as the figurative weight that each of them carry for each other. Even though this book is fictional it reveals the truth about human nature.
